When Prince Duncan Caldwell loses his way home and knocks on a stranger’s door, looking to find shelter, he doesn’t know his life is about to change forever. Not because he can’t tear his gaze away from the beautiful woman who opens that door, but more so because she’s a stranger yet he can’t shake the feeling she belongs to him. And discovering she’s been banned from his home can’t stop the vortex of his feelings nor the truth of his world from crashing down on him.
This is just the beginning of the Virtus Saga, where nothing is as it seems. Not the world, since its all-pervading sex drive hides a scary lack of violence. Not the people, since soul mates Prince Duncan Caldwell and Lord Christopher Templeton share a love that is unrivaled until that fateful knock on Ylianor Meyer’s dilapidated shack.
This book starts the love and the passion that entwines fiery sex into this intricate three-way relationship. It’s a unique connection, laced with jealousy and violence that are unknown to their world. This is not just another erotic dark fantasy series. This is the making of a trio. Of three remarkable characters that must overcome their uncontrollable lust to face the truth about themselves and their planet if they want to defeat the darkness about to devour them. To be as one whilst three! To share power and love in equal measures. This is their real challenge, the lesson they must learn. Otherwise, how will their world survive?

“David Smith?” Standing on the threshold, she was evidently surprised to see him on her doorstep. “Is it really you?”
Annoyed she had recognized him so fast, he played it cool and detached, as though he had no idea who she was. “Are you Ylianor Meyer?”
The question was redundant.
One look at her and it was like being with his adored master. While he studied her hair, her face and her body, only one thought kept running through his head. Amazing her resemblance to the prince! What made it more remarkable, if not downright damning, was a certain Caldwell air she seemed to possess innately, which reminded him of Duncan in the assured pose and the way she held her head.
“Oh, David.” She stepped forward, after having done some checking of her own. “You know I am.”
“Then I have a gift for you from Prince Caldwell.” Unwilling to get any friendlier than necessary, he kept his distance. “He wishes to thank you for the hospitality.” He gestured at a beautiful gray mare behind him.
“Oh...” Moving toward her, she looked overwhelmed to the point of being speechless.
Spinning around to observe the woman, he wondered if she would convince the mare to accept her. Her owner at the horse fair in Harbor Town had warned him she was not an easy one to tame. Since many had tried and failed, what better way to test Ylianor’s skills if she was to become Black Rose’s stable keeper?
Perhaps, he would get lucky, and she would flunk, thereby saving him a lot of headaches. For there was no way around it—the more he looked at her, the more she smelled like trouble. For sure, Lady Caldwell would have a fit, and what if the prince fell in love with her, like his father had with Mary Jane?
Watching her circling the horse, he realized two things. The first was that she was so much more beautiful than he had expected, too gorgeous for someone in her position. The second was that she was sure to alter Black Rose’s peaceful balance.
And to think he was part of it. Had been part of it ever since Prince Charles in person had chosen him as young Duncan’s companion. Then growing up, he had taken on more responsibilities until he now ran Black Rose behind the scenes. But if he loved his job, he loved his master more. The real deal for him was the closeness he shared with Duncan that went beyond mere duty. That he craved the prince’s attention in a more intimate way had become apparent to him only recently. That Duncan would never agree to it had also become quite clear.
Unlike most everybody else, the striking dark-haired man was just not interested in sex with someone he did not consider at his same level. And he totally approved of Prince Caldwell’s rigid selection in bed, however open and unconventional he was about everything else. The world was broken up in classes after all, so only logical masters belonged with masters, servants with servants. Clear-cut and precise, there was no doubt in his mind that he had to conform to this natural order of things.
Just his bad luck he was born servant to a man so far above him, so stunning in his looks, so very desirable at every possible level that sometimes he drowned in his unrequited lust.
Shaking his head clear of the dangerous thoughts, he focused on her once more as she held out her hand in front of the wet muzzle.
“Hello, Starlet,” she cooed softly. “You are a beauty. You know that?”
The horse shook her head.
“Why Starlet?” Curious, he walked toward her.
“That’s her name,” she assured as though the mare herself had revealed it to her.
Starlet shook her head again. Then approaching the outstretched hand of the motionless woman, she stopped to smell the raised palm. Probably sensing an acceptance of sorts, she reached over with the other hand and patted her neck.
“Starlet, you are a beautiful fine horse.” Her small hand became lost in the mare’s backside.
“She is.” He had to admit he was proud of his choice. “And she’s your new care.”
“Your prince is very generous.” Without looking at him, she spoke the words as though talking to herself.
“Hem... actually...” He cleared his throat. “He was hoping this gift would make you accept a job he has in mind for you.”
“A job?” Still cuddling the mare, she did not bother facing him. “What kind of job?”
***
Upon riding away from the village, it seemed hardly a coincidence that she relived Prince Charles’s dying moment. Then again, she did not believe in coincidences for everything always happened for a purpose. And having just burned her father’s body in the town’s square seemed enough of a purpose.
She knew she had looked distant and cold through it all. Deeply lost in herself was how she had felt, unable to handle the many, too many, lights flashing around her. As if the giant blaze had not been enough! But shutting off everyone’s lights sparking brighter than the dancing flames was an impossible task. So she had withdrawn further into herself, the place she knew best, and stared at the void that had seemed her future.
Then David and Starlet had changed everything. Up until their arrival, hard reasoning had almost convinced her to leave the village, if not the district all together. Yet here she was, returning home, rushing through the front gate and curving around the hills to reach the top. So what had changed?
And no, she did not want to think of the unexpected kiss that had spun her senses to a place they had no business going.
Nice bit here. Sounds like there’s trouble and some interaction ahead
Definitely lots of trouble and lots of interaction!

Lots going on here — most of it unspoken.
Yep, you could fill another book with all that’s not said 🙂

It will be interesting to see how this works out for these three.
Interesting and long, cause this is a minor but strong undercurrent of the entire saga!

I’ve had horses for 40 years, so any time there’s a horse in the story, it catches my attention.
Uh, I love horses, too! You know, Karen, in the last book of this series, The Lord, Virtus Saga #8, my 3 main characters had to deliver Starlet’s foal, and that was quite a feat to write. If you love horses, it’s a highly recommended read 🙂
