Between the amazing world building, plentiful sex, great characters, and well-developed plot, this book is the start of something special!
That the Virtus Saga isn't just another dark fantasy series will become apparent upon reading all the reviews. It's central theme is about the making of a trio, which remains the main focus also in the rewriting of the first two books of the series. That's why I present The Sex's reviews under the Virtus Sex cover, for the two are essentially the same book. Virtus Sex is, in fact, a newer, more polished version of The Sex, with the same storyline enriched by the addition of more sex scenes and more explanations on how the three-way relationship comes together and grows.
I hope you enjoy reading the reviews as much as the books themselves!

SUMMARY
The World
Sex, sex and more sex without limits or boundaries—not in numbers, not in gender, whether it's the phase, the pledge or the heat—such is Sendar's very foundation, an apparently peaceful planet, without the usual pestilences associated with mankind, wars, hunger, violence. But is it really so?The story
Unknown to most, powerful forces dominate Sendar's feudal-like society, the ability to wield destructive energy so strong in some people, it's threatening to devastate their world. But to reach a new balance you have to learn, grow, blend with the world from which you come, then go beyond it before the world collapses into chaos. And that's what the prince, his lover and his woman must learn to do if sex, power, magic, passion and jealousy won't stand in their way.Jan 18, 2011 [ OFFICIAL REVIEW ]
Laura Tolomei illustrates an incredible fantasy world and commences what is sure to be an amazing series with THE SEX.
THE SEX begins the story of Prince Caldwell, his lover Chris Templeton, and Ylianor Meyer. They all live on a planet called Sendar, a place where a life filled with sexual delights is the norm. And their worlds are about to collide and yield unexpected but very powerful results.
Prince Cadwell is coming home after a long absence and gets lost along the way. He comes to a house looking for shelter and is faced with a gorgeous young woman who he feels he should know but for the life of him, he doesn't know her. She knows him though, and they actually share a past. Her name is Ylianor Meyer and she was banished from his home when she was just a little girl.
Accused by the prince's jealous mother of being a witch, she has suffered since she was sent away from the only real home she's ever known. Although he doesn't remember her, he can't help but want her and want her with him. He takes her with him back to his home and meets the expected backlash.
His mother is furious, his current lover Chris wants her gone, and even the prince is uncertain why he feels this strong need to be with this "witch". However, through sex, the prince finds that Ylianor has powers that allow her to see the core of others and even communicate in people's minds. The prince wants to keep both of his loves but Chris wants nothing to do with any woman, especially this one with whom the prince is so enamored. But when the three of them are called to see the ruler of their land, they learn that they have to work together to become a unit or their world may be in danger.
This book was really fascinating. This world on Sendar was very unique. It seemed a bit archaic, people traveling by horse, no electricity, but it was very evolved. The author did an amazing job with building this society from the language used to the societal norms.
The main characters in the story, the prince, Chris, and Ylianor, are very three-dimensional, and the way their stories are interwoven was very well thought out. The plot was very intricate and kept me guessing as to where it was going. I felt like the story moved very slowly in the beginning, but I think a lot of that was due to the author setting up the story.
Now, with a title like THE SEX, I'm sure that most people would be expecting a lot of it. All types of ways with a variety of partners. This also seems to be very important to our main characters as it unleashes powers and makes connections that they were not aware of. The sex scenes are quite descriptive and erotic, and they are always in the flow of the story. I felt like some of the treatment of Ylianor was horrible, but it is explained away later when the secrets of the main characters are revealed.
This is the first book in a series, and I feel like there was a lot of set up in this book for the rest of the series. There was a cliffhanger at the end where we were left with a lot more questions than answers, and I wanted to scream because things were just getting to the point where I didn't want the book to end, but I am surely going read the second book as I have to know what happens.
Overall, I give it 4 stars. Between the amazing world building, plentiful sex, great characters, and well-developed plot, this book is the start of something special.
